The Technical High School
The Technical High School started
life as the Springfield Industrial Institute in the mid 1890s and eventually became a public school. The
local firm of Eugene & George Gardner designed the main building, which
these pictures depict. Soon after it was built, additions were made to the
the building, which brought the building all the way across the block to
Spring Street. These additions have been demolished for parking for the new
federal courthouse. The school was closed in 1986 when it and Classical High
School were combined into the new Central High School. There are plans to
build a new state-run data backup facility on the site that would retail the
facade of the building. These plans have been held up by calls for the
facility to be sited at a different location.
