Mason Square Fire Station
The fire station at Mason Square was built in 1886 when
the area around what was Winchester Square was beginning to be developed.
The picture at left shows the original configuration of the fire station.
The pictures at right show the same building today. At some point the tower
was taken off, an addition was added to the back and another full story was
added to the building. The structure functioned as a fire station until a
new station was build for the area. Since then the building has been empty.
It is the anchor of the Mason Square Neighborhood and is passed by thousands
of people daily as two major streets converge. Sitting at the base of the
Indian Motorcycle factory which is now apartments. While there are no
definite plans for the city owned building, it is one of the buildings being
considered for a new Mason Square Branch Library. |
