Chestnut Street School
The two top images at left show the
original size of the Chestnut Street School when it was built as a grammar
school during the last turn of the century. The other black and white image
shows the addition, which duplicates the original facade exactly. Additions
where also made to the back of the building, which included an auditorium,
two gymnasiums, and a cafeteria. In the 1990's a new Chestnut School was
built on Plainfield Street in the Brightwood Neighborhood, but the school
continued to be used by the City School Department for classroom place. It
was finally deemed unsafe and permanently closed in recent years. There is
currently a development plan to turn the old school into market rate condos.
